National Strategy on HIV/AIDS Prevention Must Included Migrant Workers Issue

SatuDunia, Bali. Due to HIV/AIDS national prevention, our government doesn’t have a serious intention regarding migrant workers issue. Rather, they focus on other component of HIV/AIDS prevention. Coordination of Action Research on Asia and Mobility (CARAM Asia) rue about the home country’s policy which has not included the migrant workers issue into the part of comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention.

That aim was clarified by CARAM Asia within their press release taking place on Migrant Workers Forum in International Congress on AIDS in Asia Pacific, held in Bali, last month.

They also surged the home country for migrant workers such as Indonesia to put this issue into prevention, treatment, and care services on HIV/AIDS National Plan.

CARAM Asia which members are 29 organizations in 17 countries, asked for ASEAN’s dedication and commitment regarding the protection on migrant workers rights. According to the ASEAN Declaration about migrant workers rights has been adopted by the head-chief in ASEAN countries at the previous 2007 ASEAN Summit, Cebu Philippines.

In fact, the head-chief of ASEAN countries has completed the recommendation concerning programs and policies which stand up for their migrant workers. This recommendation—included health services—was announced at High Level Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue held in Bangkok on 12-13 February.

Therefore, CARAM Asia surged the ASEAN committee who recommended on ASEAN previous summit to reckon with migrant workers issue as part of component in National HIV/AIDS Plan and Strategy.

The government of migrant worker’s home country, especially ASEAN needed to revise their policies. The regulations and policies needed to revise such as policy on permitting entry of people with HIV/AIDS.
